LFG to Liquid Methane with CO2 Wash®

Acrion produced over 10,000 gallons of liquid methane from landfill gas processed with CO2 Wash®. Two of Waste Management’s natural gas powered trucks collecting refuse at Fort Dix and McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey refueled with landfill LNG. The trucks fueled at the Burlington County Landfill (Columbus, NJ) where they deposited refuse daily. Each truck accumulated 600 hours of operation. An inspection of each truck's engine at 300 and 600 hours of service showed outstanding results in terms of engine wear and maintenance. Project participants include Mack Trucks, Inc., Air Products, Chart Industries and Brookhaven National Laboratory (Upton, NY).
Processing steps required to convert LFG to LNG with CO2 Wash® are shown below.
LFG cleaning with CO2 Wash®
LNG production requires recovery of pure CH4 from LFG. Additional CO2 is removed from clean methane product after CO2 Wash® (B) to prevent solid CO2 formation during methane liquefaction.

Two Air Liquide (MEDAL) membranes operating in series at 200 psig reduce the CO2 concentration from 30% to 50 ppm. Clean methane is liquefied with liquid nitrogen.

Two Waste Management refuse trucks refueled with landfill LNG, consuming daily about 70 gallons each. The trucks collected refuse at Fort Dix and McGuire Air Force Base, NJ for disposal at Burlington County Landfill. Each truck accumulated over 600 hours of operation. Engine inspections showed outstanding results in terms of wear and maintenance.

For this demonstration Acrion produced over 10,000 gallons of liquid methane from landfill gas processed with CO2 Wash®. Purity of liquid methane was continiously monitored by Acrion and confirmed through independent analysis by Atlantic Analytical Laboratory, Whitehouse, NJ.
